Free State School of Nursing (FSSON) is the institution providing education and training of nurses in the Free State. It is accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). It has a Head Office which is located in Bloemfontein, three main campuses and eight satellite campuses. The Southern Campus is in Bloemfontein, Northern Campus in Welkom and Eastern Campus in QwaQwa.

ACCESS CRITERIA FOR THE CURRENT 4 YEAR DIPLOMA COURSE

CALCULATION OF M – SCORE [MATRICULATION PRIOR 2008]

Percentage obtained in English must be above 50%

  • Preference will be given to candidates with science subjects. [Biology, Physiology, Physical Science, Mathematics etc.]
  • Ensure that you have attained at least a M-Score of 24 [See below for calculation of M Score]

Consider up to a maximum of 6 subjects as follows:

  • at least 2 subjects on higher grade
  • at least 2 languages
  • English must be one of the 2 languages and must be at higher grade
  • 4 best other subjects.

SENIOR CERTIFICATE OBTAINED IN 2008 OR LATER

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with six subjects from the designated list
  • English (offered as Home Language or First Additional Language) with an achievement rating of 4 or better
  • Academic Point Score (APS) of at least 27 or higher (See below for calculation of APS)
  • Preference will be given to candidates with life science subjects and/or physical science

The Free State School of Nursing’s point system for converting your Grade 12 achievement to an Admission Point Score is explained in the table below.
Column 1 (NSC level of achievement) and Column 2 (Percentage) gives the NSC level of achievement that is awarded for percentages attained in your Grade 12 subjects (Six subjects from designated list)

APPLICATIONS

  • Applications are open every year from 02 May until 31 July, for the intake in January of the following year.
  • Application forms are available at the Main Campuses and are only issued to candidates meeting the access criteria.
  • Candidates in Grade 12 should use their mid-year school report to apply.
  • Qualifying candidates will be invited for assessment tests and interviews during September/October.
  • Selected candidates will be notified by the 30th
  • Candidates who will not have received the acceptance letters by the 30 November should take it that their applications were not successful.

ACCESS CRITERIA FOR THE CURRENT 2 YEAR BRIDGING COURSE

  • Approved Study Leave from employer and release letter
  • Registration as with SANC as an Enrolled Nurse
  • Proof of SANC’s annual license to practice

ACCESS CRITERIA FOR THE CURRENT 1 YEAR DIPLOMA IN MIDWIFERY

  • Approved Study leave and release letter from employer
  • Registration with SANC as a Registered Nurse
  • Proof of SANC’s annual license to practice

ACCESS CRITERIA FOR THE CURRENT 1 YEAR CRITICAL CARE NURSING

  • Approved Study leave and release letter from employer
  • Registration with SANC as a Registered Nurse
  • Proof of SANC’s annual license to practice
  • Proof of experience of a minimum of six (6) months experience in an ICU environment

ACCESS CRITERIA FOR THE CURRENT 1 YEAR PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

  • Approved Study leave and release letter from employer
