The Free State MEC for Health, Ms. Mathabo Leeto accompanied by the HOD, Mr. Godfrey Mahlatsi conducted another unannounced visit to Phekolong Hospital in Bohlokong Township, Bethlehem on Monday, 1 May 2023.

This hospital that conducts more than 100 deliveries was opened in 1971 and is now in its 52 years of existence.
MEC and her team observed that:
- Status of the hospital is very old and needs revamp and fixing of the leaking roof.
- Need for urgent attention to ensure that the Theatre operates beyond week days but also on weekends
- Shortage of Staff – funded vacant post to be filled.
- Shortage of linen and blankets as a result they use other hospital branded linen e.g Bongani and others to compensate for the shortage of their own linen.
- Linen services to improve their service offering by not mixing the linen of different hospitals, so that each hospital can receive their branded linen with its correct name.
- Meals for hospitals in the Free State should be standardised, so that patients can experience the same quality of meals
- Despite the hospital being old, it was commended for its cleanliness.
