Mission

The Free State Department of Health will achieve its vision by:

  • Providing quality, accessible and comprehensive health services through a family and community -based Primary Health Care (PHC)  Approach  to the Free State community;
  • Optimally utilizing all its resources to provide the caring and compassionate services;
  • Empowering and developing all its personnel and stakeholders; and
  • Adopting an evidence based and information centered approach to planning and decision making for the achievement of better health outcomes.

Strategic Objectives and Mandate

The mandate of the Department is to render quality and accessible health care services to the Free State Community. Strategic direction is derived from the following:

  •  Government Programme of Action (2009 Election Mandate)
  • Annual State of the Nation Address
  •  Annual State of the Province Address
  •  Premier’s Injunctions and Executive Council resolutions
  •  Provincial Extended Executive Council Lekgotla Resolutions
  •  National Health 10 Point Plan (NHS Priorities)

Entities reporting to the Member of the Executive Council

NHLS as established according to the NHLS Act, No 37 of 2000. The Act provides for health laboratory services tothe Free State Department of Health ascontained in the SLA. The nature of business of the NHLS includes;

  • Provide cost effective laboratory services
  • Support HIV and AIDS program
  • Support TB Programme
  • Support Cervical Cancer Programme
  • Comply with SLA
